Above all, "girls love romance" is a symptom of a common cultural stereotype. Girls aren't raised with questions like "Do you want to be a lawyer or a firefighter when you grow up?" but rather, "Do you want to marry a lawyer or a firefighter someday?"
Boys are given books about jobs and various adventures, while up until recently the only stories marketed to girls were books about princesses (or ordinary girls) who suffer and slave until they find their prince (boyfriend/lover) who whisks them off to a romantic life of happiness and ease. Look at a toy store and you'll see this trend is strongly reflected in toys, also.
Girls aren't often taught that they have other options.
Any variations in the heroine's interests were generally just to make her more interesting to the male rescuer. Martial artist? What a unique woman. Must get to know her better ... and save her by the end of the story so she will never again need to bloody her dainty feet ... etc. (Thankfully this literary limitation is changing rapidly.)
Still, in families everywhere brothers are outside running the lawn mower, fixing the car, and given varied responsibilities while the girls are frequently kept safely at home learning how to take care of their future husbands unless they're going out with someone or shopping.
